MDL0073 - ORIGAMI - BINGE BASKET (FROM A RECTANGLE)

Text-Only Instructions

Credits and Resources:

This model was folded by me without any external reference or resource. It is likely to be a traditional model, though.

If you are aware of any other source where this model or similar might be listed, please let me know so I can reference it under this heading.

Paper to be used: Rectangular, any size; thicker paper or thin cardstock is recommended.

Folding level: Easy/Beginner

Steps: 15

Description: This is a fairly large rectangular open box or basket with the sloping short sides representing handles.

It will hold its shape fairly well, but is not sturdy enough to withstand continued use. It is easy to fold from memory and thus great if you need a container on the fly.

The basket is not as strong as other containers that lock securely in place, but it will hold its shape, especially if folded from thick paper or thin cardstock.

You might want to secure the small points on the short sides with a dab of glue.

Remarks:

This basket is easy and quick to fold. Take care not to refold, stretch or tug at the paper too much when folding, or the sides of the basket will not be straight and will tend to bulge towards the outside.

Make these baskets to co-ordinate with the colors of a party, especially if you want an easy clean-up.

They are also very useful when you are in need of a container in a flash, to hold left-overs or discarded shells, skins or bones after a meal, or for a quick lunch at the office.

These baskets can be stored flat and are great to use in the car or to take with when going for an outing.

Recycle by folding your baskets from old office paper or magazine pages.

Fold baskets from newspaper to use as seed trays or pots that can be placed directly in the ground and left to degrade with time.

If using two-sided origami paper, lay your paper with the patterned or colored side down before starting to fold.

The color or pattern will be visible on the outside of your box or basket.

Step 1

Place a rectangular piece of paper down on a hard, flat surface in the landscape orientation, or with the short sides left and right.

Step 2

Fold the top edge down to meet the bottom edge to form a horizontal center crease line.

Crease and unfold.

Step 3

Fold both the top and bottom edges in to meet at the horizontal crease line you have just folded.

Crease well and leave folded.

Step 4

Fold the left edge over to meet the right edge to form a vertical center crease line.

Crease and unfold.

Step 5

Fold both the left and right edges in to meet at the vertical center crease line you have just folded.

Crease well and unfold.

Step 6

Fold the left top corner down to meet the first vertical crease line you encounter.

Unfold.

Step 7

Fold the bottom left corner up in the same way.

Unfold.

Step 8

Repeat with the right top and bottom corners.

Unfold all corners.

Step 9

Turn paper so one of the short sides is facing you.

Step 10

Open the paper all the way again.

Step 11

Lift the edge nearest you up along the first horizontal crease and, at the same time, gently push the left and right corners toward each other.

They will collapse and meet each other at the inside center of the basket,  also forming its long sides in the process.

Step 12

Turn the model 180 degrees and repeat forming the corners on the other side.

You will now have a long and high basket with the short sides a bit higher than the long sides.

Step 13

Focus on one of the short sides of the basket. You will notice two sharp points coming together on the inside of the basket.

Just above these points there will be two flaps with 90 degree corners. Fold these flaps away from each other and down diagonally as far as they will go.

The flaps will fold over and also cover the sharp points that are just below them.

Crease well on both sides, ensuring the folds are similar. Leave folded.

Step 14

Lastly, focus on the 90 degree top corners on the left and right of the short side of the basket. Fold both corners in and down to form small triangles at the top left and right.

These folds should be done so the points will overlap the short sides of the basket, helping to lock it in place and forming a sloping side for the model.

When folding, take care to leave the center of the short side of the basket unfolded. only fold fairly small corners on the left and right.

Crease well on both sides, ensuring the folds are similar. Leave folded.

Step 15

Rotate the basket 180 degrees and complete the last steps on the opposite side as well.

Your basket will have straight, long sides with short sides that are also straight, but seem to be slightly higher and sloped at the corners, representing handles.
