Description and more information:
Alysha shares with us her instructions for this intricate lily that she learnt as a child.
The lily, folded from the Bird Base, is three-dimensional with a long stem and 4 graceful petals that curve upwards and outwards.
Apart from these, 4 more small points denote the center of the flower.
Instructions:
1. Position a square of paper on your work surface so that its points are facing up and down, left and right.
2. Bring the left point over to meet the right point. Crease and unfold.
3. Bring the top point down to meet the bottom point. Crease and unfold.
4. Turn the paper over and position the square so that its edges are facing up and down, left and right.
5. Bring the left edge over to meet the right edge. Crease and unfold.
6. Bring the top edge down to meet the bottom edge. Crease and leave folded.
7. Grasp the resulting rectangle at its left and right sides and push inward. The folds you made previously should allow the model to collapse into a square or diamond shape with one folded flap sticking out towards the front of the model and one sticking out towards the back.
8. Fold the front flap to the left and fold the back flap to the right so that your model will lie flat. The model will have one open end. The open end should be facing toward you.
9. Fold the top right edge in to meet the vertical crease at the center of the model. Crease and unfold.
10. Fold the top left edge of the model in to meet the vertical crease at the center of the model. Crease and unfold.
11. Next, open the top layer of the bottom right of the model. Pinch the right-pointing corner of this flap between two fingers, with one finger inside the 2 layers of the flap and one outside. While still holding this corner, move your fingers to the left until the corner comes to rest at the center crease of the model . The flap should collapse along the folds you previously made to make a smaller triangle at the top of your model with its open end facing you. You should not make any new creases in this step
12. Fold the top left edge of this smaller triangle to meet the top right edge of the smaller triangle, folding it in half along its vertical axis. The model should now consist of a diamond shape on the bottom with a narrower kite shape on the top, with the right point of the bottom diamond extending out past the right point of the top kite.
13. Repeat steps 11 and 12 with the left side of the top layer of the model. Your model should now be a symmetrical diamond on the bottom layer with a symmetrical kite shape on the top.
14. Flip over the model and repeat steps 9-13 on the back side. You should now have a kite shaped model with smooth surfaces on the front and back with the open end facing you.
15. Pick up the flap on the right of the model, top layer only, and flip it to the left like turning the page of a book. Your model should now be divided into two triangular sections: a smooth triangle at the top and a triangle consisting of 2 separate vertically-divided flaps at the bottom.
16. Fold the bottom right edge of the top layer only in to meet the center of the model.
17. Repeat with the lower left edge.
18. Fold the entire top point of the model downward, creasing at the point where the upper corners from the folded flaps from the previous 2 steps meet the outer edges of the model. Crease well and unfold.
19. Next we will do a petal fold. Unfold the lower left and right flaps from steps 16 and 17. Grasp the single horizontal edge of paper near the bottom of the model and move it upward. The top layer should collapse on the folds you have previously made to form a smaller kite shape on top of the larger bottom layer of the model.
20. Fold the top point of this smaller kite shape down as far as it will go.
21. Flip over the model from left to right and repeat steps 15-20.
22. Pick up the top 2 layers of flaps on the right side of the model and flip them from right to left, like turning the page of a book. Then repeat steps 16-20 on this face of the model.
23. Pick up the model and flip it over from left to right. Then repeat step 22. You should have now completed 4 petal folds, and your model should be a skinny kite shape with it’s bottom half vertically divided in two.
24. Pick up the top layer of the right side of the model and turn it from right to left, like turning the page of a book, to reveal a smooth surface.
25. Fold the upper right edge of the model, top layer only, to meet the vertical center crease. Crease and leave folded.
26. Repeat with the upper left edge. The bottom point of this layer will be one of your flower’s petals. Fold the top layer of this bottom point upward as far as it will go.
27. Flip the model over from left to right. Then Flip the right flap, top layer only, over from right to left like turning the page of a book to reveal a smooth surface.
28. Repeat steps 25-26 on this face of the model.
27. You will notice that there are flaps in the center of the left and right sides of the model that stick out beyond the upper and lower layers. Fold the model so that these flaps are opened and become the upper and lower smooth surfaces of the model. Then repeat steps 25 and 26.
28. Flip the model over and repeat steps 25 and 26 one last time. Your model should now look like a kite with many layers, consisting of a long skinny top point and a small bottom point divided vertically.
29. Now it’s time to open the flower. Pull the long, skinny, flaps at the top and bottom layers of the model to point perpendicularly outward from the model's surfaces. Then open the model and pull out the corresponding flaps on the left and right sides. You should have a 3D shape with a tapered body with a point at the bottom, 4 petals sticking out to each side, and 4 small points sticking upward in the center. You can curl the petals for a more life-like appearance around a finger or a pencil.
