There are many ways to fold rings and bracelets using origami techniques. Some creations use multiple units that are connected in different ways to make a modular type of bracelet or ring. This model uses only one square.
This pattern was originally available on the site of Michel Lucas, Aveuglami.fr, that is, unfortunately, no longer operational.
Depending on the size and type of paper you choose, you could make a ring, a napkin ring or a bracelet. For a bracelet, start with a square of around 20 x 20 cm, but it may take some trial and error to find the right size, so try with some recycled or copy paper first, until you are happy with the right length and width for your bracelet.
For an interesting color pattern, use two-tone origami paper.
Steps: 16
Folding level: Easy/Beginner
Step 1
Place your square down with one of its points nearest you.
Step 2
Fold the top point down to meet the bottom point to form a two-layered triangle.
Step 3
Find the top center of the figure by bringing the left point over to meet the right; make a pinch mark and then unfold.
Step 4
Bring the bottom point, the single front layer only, up to meet the mark you made in Step 3.
Crease and leave folded.
Step 5
Bring the new bottom edge up, folding through all the layers, to meet the top edge.
Make sure the point from the previous step does not move during this step.
Step 6
Fold the bottom edge up to meet the top edge once more.
Take care to make your creases accurately as the folds increase.
Step 7
Unfold the front flap to have the triangle of Step 2, now with various horizontal creases.
Step 8
Flip the model from left to right.
Step 9
Using the unfolded flap that is now at the front, repeat Steps 4 to 7.
Result: We once again have a two-layered triangle, both layers now marked with various horizontal folds.
Step 10
Using the first crease just below the top hinged edge, valley fold the paper upwards, making a crease and leaving folded.
The model will now have the back triangle still pointing towards you, while the front triangle will be pointing away from you.
Step 11
Next, valley fold the top triangle down towards you again, using the first fold line above the hinge fold you have just created.
You would like for the last two folds to stack up on top of each other.
Step 12
Repeat folding the front flap downwards and upwards, using the creases of the accordion folds, forming a narrow stack, ending in a small triangle that will be pointing away from you.
Step 13
Flip the model from left to right.
Step 14
Using the unfolded flap that is now at the front, repeat Steps 10 to 12.
Result: We will end up with a long, narrow band with increasingly smaller decorative flaps, ending at the center with two small triangles, one on the back and one on the front.
There will be a hinged edge that will be the same one we had folded in Step 2.
Step 15
Open the model along the hinged edge so it can lay flat. We will have a bracelet with various flaps forming a pattern on the outside of the bracelet, with the triangles meeting at its center. The back or underside of the model will be smooth.
Step 16
Form a circle by bringing the ends of the bracelet together and tucking one end into the pocket formed by the other end. If you find the bracelet or ring is coming apart easily, use some temporary tacky glue on the inside. It can be removed easily with minimal damage to the paper.
